Bingham OS – RESTFul API plan

Written by Mfawa Alfred Onen on . Posted in Projects

This has been on our todo list for quite some time now. We have decided to bring it forward so that it can be further deliberated on. The design will involve exposure to well know resources which include student information, courses, department information, accommodation information, student fees/payment details and library information. Since Codeigniter is the lightweight framework of choice for us here at Bingham ICT, we have decided to adopt Phil sturgeon’s REST server implementation. This will allow us modify it to suite our requirements and possibly add some features along the way.

We plan to come up with a design soon and a possible work break down structure for the project. This will be it Meir now, until then, it me signing off for Bingham ICT.

Bingham OS: Post Implementation & Change Management

Written by Mfawa Alfred Onen on . Posted in Projects

It has been a while since I blogged about anything, we have been busy tackling implementation issues and undocumented change management from management as regards to Bingham OS. We are almost done with some of the changes and will soon start development on the remaining features of BiOS which includes Exeat and Clinic automation and management modules. Also I will like to start a codeigniter series for new users and and professionals out there. you may be wondering why start new tutorials on codeigniter when there are a lot out on the internet, well my series will start as an introduction to beginners but quicky build on to add intermediate and advanced level tutorials and tips.

As usual, I will come back here with the updates and what is happening in Bingham ICT. Until then, stay tuned.

Bingham OS: Student Accommodation Automation!

Written by Mfawa Alfred Onen on . Posted in Projects

Okay before I start, I believe you are all expecting me to talk about the RESTFul API decision for Bingham OS; well we have taken another distracted path but will soon come back to the API implementation. An exciting new challenge has been thrown to Bingham ICT and we all put our hopes on CodeIgniter (our PHP framework of choice) to solve this. The Implementation of the Student Hostel accommodation automation is also part of Bingham OS which we hope to finish before the ending of August. This will also be integrated into the automated PIN number activation system that will validate student fees and issue password appropriately.

So this will do it for student accommodation automation. Until next week, its me signing off for Bingham ICT Team.

Bingham University Applicant Portal: Matriculation Number Automation!

Written by Mfawa Alfred Onen on . Posted in Projects

This week we have decided to automate the Matriculation number generation of the Registry unit by creating a module that plugs into the existing Applicants Portal. A RESTFul API has been proposed to unify all the applications running on Bingham Operating System (Codename: Bingham OS). The Matriculation number module is currently at alpha 1 stage with the ability to assign a Matriculation number to an admitted applicant/candidate and generate a summary of allocated Matriculation numbers by departments for official use thanks to CodeIgniter.

We intend to finalize the decision and the direction of the proposed RESTFul API before the end of next week by the Grace of God. So until then, this has been another blog article from Bingham ICT team.

Bingham University – A Post UTME experience

Written by Mfawa Alfred Onen on . Posted in Projects

We have just concluded the first Post UTME testing exercise which started on 28th to 29th of July 2011. The records generated from the Bingham Applicants Portal was 99% accurate and it solved the problems encountered during previous Post UTME examination. A major bug that was immediately fixed was an issue with the CSV export system which omits the choice of course made by the applicants. The choice of course made it easier to sort the result of the Post UTME examination into various department. The Total Number of Applicants examined was 544.

In conclusion, we have had great success with Bingham Applicants Portal and Codeigniter in particular for making it very easy to add features on the go.
